:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Wendy Kitchens -- An excellent, character-driven, slow burn, Southern gothic horror : A languid, sprawling novel that reads like a summer day in the South. Don’t go in expecting a fast payoff. Everything in this book is a slow, delicious burn. The classic, gothic elements are all present and accounted for in some fashion or another, which delighted my literature-loving heart. The book combines old school horror elements (curses, ghosts, musty old homes) with the cutthroat world of academia, and laces complicated issues of identity, sexuality, and relationships through the entire thing. The setting itself may as well be its own character. If you have spent time in this particular region of the South, you can feel the oppressive humidity squeezing your lungs while you read this. A gothic tale set in the city I currently live in....I'm sold. I really liked how the plot was drawn out. The reader is fed bits and pieces along the way but not until it's too late do you realize what exactly is going on. I can't wait to see what this author does in the future. The Author's way of writing draws you in like a warm blanket, comforting as much as it creeps, it makes you think and feel things you've forgotten or never pondered.
